BROOKS KICKS OFF 2010 MONROE COUNTY SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Innovative County/Library Partnership Encourages Kids to Read

June 8, 2010

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks today kicked off the second annual Monroe County Summer Reading Program at DeWitt Road Elementary School in Webster.  Brooks was joined by Rochester-Monroe County Youth Bureau Director Robert Zinck, Monroe County Library System Assistant Director Sally Snow and County Legislator Carmen Gumina.
“The Monroe County Summer Reading Program was created to promote reading among young students in the summer months,” said Brooks.  “Our goals are simple: to make reading fun for children and to encourage more kids to sign up for a library card and become more active within their local library branch.”
The Monroe County Summer Reading Program is free and open to all school-age children. Parents can register their young readers through the County’s website at: www.MonroeCounty.gov/libra-SummerReadingRegistration.php.
Students who sign up for the Monroe County Summer Reading Program will receive a bookmark and are eligible for one of thousands of prizes, which have been donated by more than 30 local businesses and not-for-profit agencies. In an exciting new development, Kango Play Center in Henrietta has pledged to donate one free admission pass per registrant under the age of 12.
“The generosity of the Summer Reading Program’s sponsors is second to none,” added Brooks.  “I would like to personally thank all of the companies, not-for-profit groups and sports franchises for showing that the spirit of giving is alive and well in Monroe County.”
