Monroe GOP backs Fred Smerlas for Congress
17 congressional, state, and local candidates endorsed

Gathering at the Radisson Riverside Hotel this evening, members of the Monroe County Republican Committee officially endorsed former Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Fred Smerlas for the 28th Congressional District, an area currently represented by Louise Slaughter.
“We are proud to support Fred Smerlas in the race for the 28th Congressional District,” said Republican Chairman Bill Reilich. “I spoke with Fred today and he is strongly considering running. Given his name recognition as a former Buffalo Bill and radio personality, I believe he has the potential to be an extremely strong candidate.”
County Republicans also voted to back former Corning Mayor Tom Reed for the 29th Congressional District, and Congressman Chris Lee in bid to be reelected in the 26th district. Ann Marie Buerkle secured the nomination for the 25th district seat at a mini-convention earlier this year.
The Monroe County GOP endorsed four sitting State Senators: George Maziarz (District 62), Joe Robach (56), Jim Alesi (55), and Mike Nozzolio (54).
The committee also endorsed State Assembly incumbents Steve Hawley (Assembly District 139) and Bill Reilich (134). Newcomers Mark Johns (135), Mark Scuderi (132), Ken Kraus (131), and Sean Hanna (130) were also endorsed as Republican candidates for State Assembly.
In judicial races, Monroe County Republican Committee endorsed East Rochester Justice Vicki Argento and Henrietta Town Justice Jim Piampiano for the two open County Court seats, as well as John Gallagher for Family Court Judge.
