Livingston County District Attorney Thomas E. Moran announces candidacy for NYS Supreme Court
(JANUARY 20, 2011 ROCHESTER, NEW YORK) - Livingston County District Attorney Thomas E. Moran today announced his candidacy for Supreme Court Justice of the Seventh Judicial District. The Seventh Judicial District includes the counties of Monroe, Livingston, Steuben, Wayne, Ontario, Yates, Seneca, and Cayuga.
At Monroe County Republican Party headquarters where the announcement was made, Bill Reilich, Chairman of the county GOP said: "Tom Moran brings a level of broad based experience that will well serve the people of the Seventh Judicial District. We in Monroe County are committed to DA Moran and his candidacy."
A former Town of Brighton police officer and Syracuse University law school graduate, Tom Moran spent most of his formative years in the same community he now serves as its DA.
The oldest of four boys, Mr. Moran grew up in Livonia, NY, and graduated from Livonia Central School in 1973. In 1974, Mr. Moran joined the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff. He earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice/Police Science from Monroe Community College in 1975.
Mr. Moran became a police officer for the town of Brighton in 1978, while attending SUNY-Geneseo and Rochester Institute of Technology – where he graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1981. Still a police officer, Mr. Moran graduated from Syracuse University College of Law in 1984.
In 1986, Mr. Moran started his law career as an attorney in private practice, working part-time as Assistant District Attorney for Livingston County. While in private practice Mr. Moran represented clients in family matters, divorce proceedings, real estate transactions, surrogate court matters, and as a defense attorney in criminal cases.
In 1992, Mr. Moran was elected Justice for the Town of Livonia. One year later, he was appointed – and subsequently elected to serve as Livingston County District Attorney after his predecessor – former DA, the late Theodore Wiggins, was elected to the County Court bench. DA Moran has served in his current capacity since.
In addition to trying the majority of felony cases, DA Moran has continually championed the rights of all crime victims, implementing programs and procedures to ensure justice is always sought for the innocent victims of maltreatment, abuse and violence. DA Moran has modernized and brought a new level of professionalism to the office he has administered for the past 18 years, constantly emphasizing continuing education, training, innovation and the efficient use of new technologies.
DA Moran has served on the executive board of the New York State District Attorney’s Association for the past 15 years, and currently is the Association’s Third Vice-President.
He regularly teaches for the New York Prosecutors Training Institute and the National District Attorneys Association. As an adjunct professor, DA Moran also teaches for Keuka College in both the Bachelor and Masters programs. He also provides instruction at numerous police academies and in-service training programs.
