REILICH ENCOURAGES BOATER SAFETY
A legislative statement by Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R ,C, I - Greece)
May 4, 2010
In recent years, there has been an unfortunate rise in drownings both locally and statewide, many of which could have been prevented if a life vest had been worn. Many are unaware that from November through May, it is illegal for any person to be aboard a boat less than 21 feet in length without wearing a life vest. This law was put in place to protect individuals from accidental drowning. It is vital that this law is obeyed because water temperatures during these months are extremely cold, making it much more difficult for individuals who accidentally fall in to fight the elements and swim.
With this past weekends opening of the canal, more families will be heading on boating excursions. As the water warms, I urge people to still use caution and wear a life vest as often as possible. Also, remember that it is illegal for any child under 11 years of age to be on a boat without a life vest. The safety of you and your loved ones should always be a priority. I encourage my constituents to remember this as they begin to enjoy the warmer weather coming our way.
